Establishing a clear budget before the project begins keeps the project on track and ensures both sides understand what the financial expectations are of the project. If you are not sure what your budget looks like, I can recommend options that would make sense for the space while still delivering on your wants, needs and expectations. Minimally, I need a baseline budget that can be expanded if you decide to do so, but cannot be reduced once I begin working on your designs and there is a lot of time that is committed to using the budget to make the best deisgn decisions possible for your space, and reducing this after we get started will cause the project to need to be restarted and renegotiated as well. In addition to budget discussions, it’s equally important to talk about timelines. Every project has its unique pace, based on factors such as scope, supply chain, and labor availability. Regular updates from me will keep you informed, ensuring that everything progresses smoothly. Being realistic about what can be accomplished in a given timeframe is essential. A well-planned project allows for flexibility, accommodating any changes that may arise. Overall, open discussions about budget and timelines help establish trust between me and you. The Initial Consultation Process to Design Proposal The initial consultation is the exploration process to collaborate with me and detemine what my scope of work will look like and can also provide you with initial ideas for the space you may not have considered. It’s not uncommon for this meeting to be filled with excitement, as both you and I will brainstorm the potential of your space! During this consultation, I will typically take measurements and notes on any existing conditions. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for you to ask questions about my process. A successful consultation relies heavily on open communication. The more details you share, the better I can tailor my approach. I am here to bring your vision to life, so don’t hesitate to be candid about your expectations! During the consultation we will discuss and determine my scope of work. My working relationship with you depends on your needs and the needs of the project. I will put together a detailed proposal which could include whether I will be charging hourly for my time, or will be paid a flat fee for the entire project. It can determine if I am selling the furniture, fixtures and products to you directly, or just consulting on their selections. We will decide if I will be involved in project management and delivery of final designs, and if it will include space planning, 3D rendering, mood boards, sample finishes, etc.. Before we get started all of the details will be determined and negotiated so it is clear what both of our expectations are for your project. Getting Started: Creating a Design Plan Once your goals are established and you have decided to move forward with me as your designer, I will start preparing your design plan. This plan serves as a roadmap, guiding every decision throughout the project. Expect to see everything we discussed and decided on for your project to be a part of this phase, which can include mood boards, color schemes, and furniture selections that reflect the vision you discussed. Flexibility is key as we discuss the design plan. There may be ideas that need refining or adjustments based on budgetary considerations. Writing this blog is long overdue. So much can happen in a year! My design business is in full swing, I am busier than ever and our house is slowly, but surely coming along. We were almost ready about a month and half ago to finally move into our Primary Suite, but my husband (sweet man that he is ❤️) asked if I would like a custom built in closet constructed first before we moved into the suite. What woman would say no to that?!! But the cost....I knew that custom closets have hefty price tags and I was somewhat cocerned we couldn't do it with what is left in our budget for the house. After some research, I discovered the Ikea PAX closet system which costs 1/4 the price of most other custom closets!! My husband looked into it further and he told me he could build it for me and make it look just like the custom closets from companies like California Closets! So...I said YES! He is still working on this and is about 2 weeks or so away from being complete, so more information to come on our closet and hopefully another blog post to show the results! Here is the progress: With only a few weeks away from moving into our primary suite, it was time to hunker down and really hammer out a design for the bedroom. We have wood floors and I had to find a rug ASAP so we could minimally setup our bed. The room has medium golden brown wood floors and cream nickel gap shiplap, so it really is a bright and blank canvas for my design. I knew I wanted to bring in color and green, blue and black are the main colors I have integrated in the house design. I wanted to represent all of these colors in the bedroom. I found the perfect rug that has a moody deep green/blue color and feels like a vintage rug at a price point that is affordable. Amber Lewis for Anthropologie Persian Rug in Green I look at the rug as the foundation of the room and use it to gain inspiration for the rest of the space. Modern cottage is the design feel of the entire house and bringing in things that feel storied, old and new helps to create this overall timeless look. Last month we took a trip to Palo Alto, CA and although I have been many times and used to live in the Bay Area, during this trip I saw the town with a different lense. Now that I am emersed in design everyday, everything around me is a source of inspiration. We had an amazing trip and wanted to share the experiences we think were top notch: 1. Bar Zola EAT I can't say enough about Bar Zola. Because my husband is an Executive Chef, it is very hard to please him and find restaurants that truly impress him -- but not this time! He and I were both thoroughly impressed by everything; the drinks were amazing, food was stellar, and the design felt fresh but storied. I love the mix of modern and vintage elements such as the bold green wall color and bar shelves full of old books For food we highly recommend: 1) the Bretzels, 2) Ricotta Gnocci, and 3) the Pistacchio Cake. Our favorite drinks were the Pensamientos (gin, blueberry, pisco, jasmine, gran classico, lime, bitters) and the Jai Alai (mezcal, charanda, apricot, turmeric, pineapple gomme lemon, pepper melange). The other part about this experience that set Bar Zola apart from other restaurants was the service. The entire staff was friendly, helpful and genuinely happy that we were there. We asked our server for her favorites on the menu and tried all of her recommendations (all fabulous). Once it was time for dessert, we had a hard time deciding between two options and when she came back she had both desserts and said the other was on the house! Such a nice touch and we were left feeling special.This is one of our new favorite spots in the Palo Alto area and we can't wait to go back. 2. el PRADO HOTEL STAY We stayed at el PRADO Hotel while visiting Palo Alto and believe it provides incredible value for the nightly rate. Compared to other hotels I have stayed at, el PRADO hotel was extremely clean and well designed. The rooms were spacious and tastely done with rich blues and whites and felt like we were staying not in a hotel, but in someone's home in the Hamptons. In the mornings right outside of our door was a full coffee station setup which was exactly what we were needing each morning. In addition to the rooms feeling luxurious, the snacks and drinks in the rooms were a pleasant surprise as well. Usually when the minibar is full of drinks we never partake because the prices are outrageous, but here the prices were extremely reasonable and so we were able to have some drinks in our room each night and enjoy the posh environment. We even shared a few snacks! The hotel is also around the corner from University Ave where many of the shops and restaurants are located so lots to see and do only walking distance away! Overall the hotel was a five star experience and a wonderful place to stay while in Palo Alto. 3. STANFORD SHOPPING MALL SHOP Stanford Shopping Mall is a MUST everytime we go to Palo Alto. It is hard to beat an upscale, outdoor mall in a place where temperatures hover around 70 degrees year round. It has all of the luxury stores like Louis Vuitton and Hermes, a Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales, but it also has one of my all time favorite places Terrain in Anthropologie . With Halloween days away, I had to share the most creative "plantscape" graveyard from our visit to Terrain. If you are a plant lover like me, there is nothing like Terrain. The ingenuious ways they use plants to create beautiful arrangements is so inspiring to me. I think it is one of the most inspiring places for me as a designer because nature and organic elements can take a well designed space and bring it to the next level. 4. GRADUATE HOTEL design inspiration If you are a fan of maximallism in design (as I am), you MUST stop into the Graduate Hotel while in Palo Alto. Walking through the main entrance, I was immediately immersed in so much design inspiration it put a huge smile on my face! I am a sucker for a gallery wall, and the gallery wall at the Graduate Hotel is a doozy!! We did not have a chance to stay or eat here, but we were told by the very friendly staff that the President's Terrace has a beautiful view of Palo Alto in a relaxing environment with fun food and drinks. We will definitely try this next time we are here. 5. OLD PALO ALTO afternoon stroll Nothing excites me more than homes built in the early 1900s and Old Palo Alto is full of homes from this era. Taking a stroll down these gorgeous tree-lined streets in perfect Palo Alto weather is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Homes of this era are full of history, charm and detailed architecture and if you are a fan of this like I am, it is a must see while you are here. Fun fact, Edwin Percy Gamble of Proctor & Gamble built one of the first homes in this neighborhood in 1902. So much history! I hope you feel inspired to take a trip to Palo Alto, CA and I promise what I have shared will not dissappoint! Coming home from this trip I was reinvigerated and ready to get back to work on my design business and our own home renovation. Call it what you want — an adventure, a midlife crisis, or wanderlust , but the past year I spent in Waco changed my life and was the inspiration behind starting this blog and my design company Fig & Ash Design Co. . I dreamed about moving there for years (yes I am a sucker for fixer upper) and finally the day had arrived and we loaded up our truck and said sayonara to California and headed East. Included in my dream was purchasing my own fixer upper, a tired old house that called out to me to give it a design hug and shine bright again like it did when it was built. We found the perfect house, a 1936 Colonial dream . When our offer was accepted, I was in a state of pure joy and shock because there were multiple offers on the house and the real estate market was crazy competitive at the time. When we closed escrow, it felt like it was meant to be, that my dream was becoming a reality…and that is when the real work began. We have moved a lot in the past 10 years- 14 times (I know) - and in the process renovated houses a few different times. We learned so much in the do-it-yourself frustration and I realized there is so much we can share. I love designing and my husband loves making me happy (and actually he is extremely handy and loves the renovation as much as I do) and we have become addicted. My husband is actually a classically trained Executive Chef so you may see some food blogs pop up now and again because he is too talented not to share. We have since sold the house and moved back to California, but that period in my life has provided me with the courage to finally share myself in a vulnerable way and write these blogs and start my own interior design company! I don’t know how many more times we will move in the next 10 years, but I hope I can use this blog to share our projects and our lives with you and hopefully help inspire you to do a few home renovation and design projects for yourself or reach out to me if you need help! It is so worth all the headaches and almost marriage ending arguments— I promise! It has been a long time coming, but it is finally time to share our fully renovated Utility Bathroom! As I shared in a previous blog, we called this space the Utility Bathroom because it will have multiple functions in this house. It is the bathroom right off of the garage and has a door to the backyard, so it will be used to clean up after a day working in the garden or coming home from work. The bathroom also has a shower to wash off in if we choose to put in pool at some point. It is also the primary bathroom when we will have guests over so I wanted it to be fun and functional. Just to recap, this is the mood board I used when designing this space: Let's start with a quick before and after, and then below I will show you some more photos of the final reveal! At the end of this blog I have also provided the sources of the main products and materials used in this bathroom. BEFORE AFTER The bathroom was clearly dated and was ready for a refresh. As has been the theme with the majority of the house, we gutted this room and started almost completely from scratch. We installed beadboard wainscotting, hexagon tile floors and subway tile for the shower. With the added wainscotting, the trim around the doors was not meeting up properly, so all of the trim was replaced and the crown molding was installed. Next up was the beautiful classic green paint color (Crisp Romaine by Benjamin Moore) which matched well with the wallpaper. As homeowners seek to bring warmth and character to their interiors, classic wallpaper offers a versatile solution that can complement any style.

"The Utility Bathroom", as we have named it in our house, is a bathroom with an exterior door to our backyard and is situated right next to our garage. Because of this, the bathroom will function best as a place to clean up after gardening or working outside, thus the Utility Bathroom was born. I immediately knew I wanted the design to include a mounted cast iron utility sink, so this was the inspiration for the room. Below is an image of the sink I fell in love with paired with gooseneck style faucets. The faucets and the cute soap dish are made to fit this sink and I purchased these over a year ago and have been waiting for the day (almost) to see it all come together! As I write this blog, the bathroom is being paited a beautiful green called Crisp Romaine by Benjamin Moore. It is similar to the color in the inspiration photo above. Its a dark, moody green with blue undertones which compliments dark blue/almost black color I have used in other rooms in the house. Below is my mood board for this room. Everything has been purchased and is being installed. The finished bathroom should be ready very soon and I can't wait to share it with you! We installed beadboard wainscotting with a chairrail trim around the entire bathroom at about 2/3 the way up the wall which gives plenty of clearance for the utility sink backsplash. This was important because I am using wallpaper for the walls above the wainscotting and I did not want the sink to sit on the wallpaper where water could splash and damage it over time. This bathroom has a shower and I get asked often if you can wallpaper a bathroom with a shower and my answer is "it depends". I don't usually recommend it unless the shower is only used for guests or one-offs. If it is used regularly, wallpaper is not a great option as the steam and humidity will lift the paper over time. It is ok for us because this is the third bathroom in the house and it is not attached or near any bedroom and the shower will be rarely used. I chose a walnut wood mirror to add warmth and a brass and black light fixture that matches the brass hardware on the shower door to tie all the hardware together in the space. I am a fan of mixing hardware finishes as I have done this in other rooms in the house. Finally, I chose to do a classic hexagon floor that you would find in turn of the century houses. The black border is a nice decorative detail that makes the space feel special and custom. We are getting so close with this room and it is so exciting to almost get to the finish line! Here is a picture of the progress thus far. You cannot see but the tile has been installed, painting is almost done and then it is time to install the sink, toilet, and lights. The final touch is the wallpaper and then the room will be ready! I am excited to show the finished product in an upcoming blog with links to the sources of everything I purchased for the space. Taking the plunge and investing in hardwood floors is a big decision. There are so many options out there and just making a choice on which floor to go with can feel daunting. I went through this process during our renovation and landed on a wide plank European oak engineered hardwood. When the day comes and it is time to install the floor, the installer will ask you "which way do you want the floor to run?". If you have a raised foundation and floor joists, the decision will be made for you because the floor must run perpendicular to the joist to provide proper support. But, if you have slab on grade, which many houses have these days, you will have to make a decision and I wrote this blog to help you make an informed decision! There are 2 options: 1) You can run the floor perpendicular to your front entrance (side to side); or 2) You can run the floor parallel to the front entrance (planks running longways drawing eye forward). Option 2 is the most common, but during this process I learned there are three things to consider before making this decision. 1. DOES YOUR HOUSE HAVE A LOT OF NATURAL LIGHT? If your home has a lot of natural light, the direction of the light is important and can impact the look of your hardwood floors. It is best to run the floor in the same direction as the main natural light source (if this is an issue) as it will make the floor the most visual appealing. If you run the floor in the opposite direction of the natural light, it is more likely to show the imperfections of the boards. Any height differences in the boards will cast a shadow. 2. DO YOU HAVE A FOCAL POINT? If there is focal point like a fireplace or large window with lots of light in the home you can lay the floor pointing the boards in the direction of the focal point. This will lead the eye to this focal point and draw attention to this architectural feature which enhances the space. 3. WHERE IS YOUR LONGEST WALL IN THE HOUSE? A final rule of thumb is to run the boards parallel to the longest wall in the house to make the house appear larger. Although, there are exceptions to this rule as well if running the boards perpendicular will enhance the shape, flow, or layout. In my home, this was a very tricky decision which is why I thought writing this blog could be helpful to others installing plank style flooring. It would appear that I should clearly run them parallel to the front entrance as they would follow (#2) and (#3) of the considerations above, but I found this decision was slightly more nuanced. My house is long and narrow. Standing at the entrance to the home you can see all the way to the end of the house. The previous plank vinyl flooring was laid parallel to the front door so your eye immediately traveled straight ahead to the back of the house. I felt like this actually drew attention to the fact the house was very narrow. FLOORING FAUX PAS (Don't Make This Mistake!) Interestingly, they decided to then change the direction of the floor and run it the opposite direction. I am assuming this was because it was better for the flow in this space, but this is a HUGE no no!! Please do not ever switch the direction of the same type of flooring in an open space like this, all the flooring should run the same directions even through narrow spaces like hallways. There are a few reasons for this: 1) See the image below where they had to add a trim piece to change the direction of the floor becuase it created a seam that had to be hidden which is unecessary and a trip hazard in middle of this room. 2) It is not asethetically beautiful, confuses the eye, and chops up the space making it appear smaller. DECISION TIME: OUR FLOORING DIRECTION After much consideration and thought, I decided to run the planks perpendicular to the front door/entrance. I believe this gives the illusion that the house is wider and more spacious. Also, running them this way allowed for the floor to run parallel to the main natural light sources of the house (#1) which helps to make the floors more visually appealing. I hope this blog helps you make the important decison regarding how to run your new plank flooring. Buying floors are a big investment and I wanted to provide some guidance that helped me greatly when I was making my decision.
